YOUNG PEOPLE AND CRIME

Adolescence and early adulthood are times of change when young people face new challenges, growth and increased vulnerability. Their behavior can be very visible and be a matter of concern to their families, to local residents, and the wider community.

WHY TARGET YOUNG PEOPLE?

Adolescence and early adulthood are crucial times in an individual’s life. It is when young people face new challenges, learn new skills, coping mechanism and lead more independent lives. During adolescence, many young people brave in taking a multiple of risks. In their teens young people may experience with drugs, drink alcohol while underage or drive vehicles without a license and before reaching the legal age limit.

RISK  FACTORS

1.       Substance use

2.       Early school leaving

3.       Gender (boys are more likely to offend than girls)

4.       Abuse – especially abuse during the transition to high school

5.       Unemployment

6.       Lack of supervision

Although some young people are perpetrators of crime, many young people are also victims of crime. The one of the examples of victims of crime is sexual violence. The sexual violence may occur in any type of relationship. Among victims age 18 to 29, two-thirds had a prior relationship with the offender. Research shows 6 in 10 rape or sexual assault victims said they were assaulted by the intimate partner, relative, friend or acquaintance.

   Besides that, early abuse is one of the victims of perpetrators. Although child sexual abuse before age 13 is not by itself a risk factor for adult sexual victimization or domestic violence, girls who were victimized before turning 12 and then again as adolescents (ages 13-17) were at much greater risk of both types of victimization as adults than any other woman.

   In a nutshell, as a young people, think wisely before do something is the most powerful ways to avoid from be criminals. The peaceful of a country is in the young people’s hand which behavior and education playing the most important roles. All the best to all the young people. Keep peaceful and live in happiest.
